Where have I been?
I know, I know. I have neglected this blog. I have been quite busy since October but that is no excuse. I should write more often. Let me tell you where I have been. I started my own news organization in the end of October. Daniel and myself decided to start Fluco Blog and we have had tremendous success. Fluco Blog covers all things Fluvanna County, “Fluco News. All of the Time.” Daniel has owned the website address for a few years now.... [Read More...]
For my second anniversary
Today, Sept. 13, 2009, is my second anniversary with my lovely girlfriend, Sarah. She is quite special to me. She does take a quite special interest in this website and frequently comments how she is not the subject of many posts. Here is a post dedicated purely to her and only her! She did notice my reasons I love my brother that I posted for his birthday. For our anniversary she recommended I do the same for our anniversary! Easy enough,... [Read More...]

What a community newspaper needs to change
My last post was a bit of a dig towards my local newspaper, the Fluvanna Review. Since that post, the writing hasn’t changed. The same poor choice of chronological order still occurs. I could show another post of the same poor writing, but I’m moving on. I’ve thought about how I could make a community newspaper better. What would I do if I were editor for three months? Could I change the way a community newspaper operates? Of course... [Read More...]
Go inverted, community newspapers!
Here is the cover of the July 3, 2009 Fluvanna Review Community newspapers are vital to many neighborhoods across our great land. If it were not for community newspapers, some locales would never be covered. People love reading what is happening not only across the country but also across the street. Community newspapers are also important for journalists. One of my favorite reporters started at a small community newspaper in Queens. Mitch... [Read More...]
Here's to you Little Zebra
The biggest announcement in the history of the Real Estate Zebra came a week ago. Incase you were not on Twitter, my brother and sister(-in-law) are having their first child due to arrive mid January. Daniel and Kari asked for people to comment on the blog entry Daniel used to break the news. With that came 38 comments! And no, I didn’t leave a comment. Why? Because I’m too good for comments! I raise the bar, not answer to it! That is... [Read More...]
HPU picks Cherry
HPU athletic director Craig Keilitz named Scott Cherry head coach of the men’s basketball team. This will be Cherry’s first time at the helm of a program and he becomes the 11th head coach in HPU. He was an assistant at University of South Carolina this past season. He also made coaching stops at George Mason, Western Kentucky and Tennessee Tech. “Sometimes you just feel it is right and I knew it was right from the beginning,”... [Read More...]

Lundy fired after 9-21 mark
Only six days after the season ended, Bart Lundy has been dismissed as head coach of the men’s basketball program. “Our desire and commitment to build a successful and championship-caliber basketball program are very strong,” said athletic director Craig Keilitz in a press release on www.highpointpanthers.com. This past year HPU went 9-21, marking the second time in program history losing more than 20 games. In Lundy’s six... [Read More...]
HPU ends season at Radford
High Point University’s men’s basketball team fell to top-seeded Radford University 82-58 in the quarterfinals of the Big South Tournament. HPU (9-21) could not stop the inside presence allowing Radford (19-11) to score 38 points in the paint. In the second half, High Point also shot a dismal 11-for-35 from the floor for 31.4 percent. “They did extend their pressure and we were challenged at the rim,” Panthers coach Bart Lundy... HPU to play in March despite loss
Despite losing Saturday night, HPU clinched the final spot of the Big South tournament. VMI (22-7, 13-5 Big South) won their first contest in High Point, 81-76. HPU (9-20, 4-14) had four players finish with double figures. Melvin Crowder shined in his final home game in front of 1,642 in attendance. Crowder finished with a career best 14 points, including four 3-pointers. “Melvin has meant so much to our program and a great kid. He kind of... [Read More...]
City should consider buying mall
This ran in the Campus Chronicle two weeks ago. Enjoy! High Point University was approached about buying Oak Hollow Mall. Rumors around school, community and the web speculate we will demolish it and then build a football stadium. Previously I have written how I feel about adding a football team: I am against it. I, however, am not against Oak Hollow Mall being demolished for an HPU athletic venue. The City of High Point needs to act quickly on... [Read More...]
HPU falls in overtime
High Point University lost another close game Tuesday night against UNC-Asheville. The Bulldogs (13-14, 9-7 Big South) defeated the Panthers (8-18, 4-12) in overtime, 81-78. “It another disappointing loss. We played hard it’s just the little things that were not doing that are costing us the games,” Jourdan Morris said. The Panthers were lead by inside forces Cruz Daniels and Jourdan Morris. Daniels finished with 25 points and 15... [Read More...]
HPU sweeps Winthrop this year
High Point University won a home men’s basketball game on a night where HPU honored the all time winningest coach in program history. HPU defeated Winthrop University for the second time this season 63-58 in front of a raucous 1,449 in the Millis Center. The win marks the first time HPU has swept WU in program history. “We are humbled to get any win. I’m glad to get any win... [Read More...]
High school wins mean college success?
Recently ran in the Campus Chronicle. Enjoy! Pop quiz: Can the men’s program become successful? The men’s team hasn’t won a game at home versus a NCAA Division I team. We have already lost seven games at home total this year. Our most losses in the Millis Center is eight. We are too close to that dubious distinction. For most of our players this is the worst team they have ever played on by the numbers. At 5-15 they aren’t... [Read More...]
Never be an island
I ran for SGA student body president of High Point University last year. I ran on the belief to make student organizations more effective by growing numbers, increasing awareness and fighting battles to improve relations between groups and school administration. Empowering the people. I came up short in this venture. It was a noble cause but the student body elected someone else; a person that is one of my truly best friends here at the school.... Are you ready for the next step?
It amazes me how students act these days. One of my professors posed this question to my class, “What is the difference between you and a Brazillian [college level] junior? He or she will work harder, be better and ask for less money. What is the difference? You speak English. Once that is gone, forget it. You lose. And by the way, after reading your essays, it is hard to believe you grew up speaking English…” That... [Read More...]
Be a star before someone else does
In my Google Reader, the News and Record had a feature article about Billy Coore, a 19 year-old Greensboro native. He does research on a fixture of his childhood, Carolina Circle Mall. The mall is long gone but his love for it continues. He has submitted his research in contests and publishes everything on his website, www.homeofcarolinacirclemall.com, as well as his blog, ccmallcity.blogspot.com. Why I bring him up is he is “blog inspiration.” ... [Read More...]
Happy Birthday, Daniel!
In honor of Dec. 14, 2008, and the special day it is for my brother, here are the 28 reasons why I love my brother, Daniel Rothamel, aka Real Estate Zebra. This are in no particular order, just as they come to me. 1. He’s balding worse than me (for now…) 2. He always gives unusual facts. Their usefulness can be debated later. 3. He always knows... The most important question
This is from another blog I write for, hpu2009.blogspot.com. The blog is required for my feature writing class. i wrote this today and I think it is a pretty good entry, enjoy! I went for my interview for my profie story. Greg Stevens and I chatted for 30 minutes about his life in the restaurant business. Here is a man that spend over 30 years involved in restaurants!
